Licensing on Suede (Currently Paused)
License issuance and verification are temporarily paused while owner authorization and live template mapping are upgraded. This page is reference material for how the V2 system works and how to prepare — nothing here is a currently issuable grant.
Status: issuance and verification paused
Until the upgrade ships and deployment canaries pass, no template, editor setting, or marketplace button anywhere on this site should be treated as permission or as a granted license. Registration and public verification of existing registration records remain live.
Templates come from the V2 contract
After deployment canaries pass, Suede will show only active, non-exclusive templates read from the configured LicenseRegistryV2 contract. Names, permissions, prices, and durations are never filled from static website defaults. Until then, no template shown elsewhere should be treated as permission.
One detail worth internalizing early: a zero price changes price only. Setting a license fee to zero does not remove or loosen the permissions of the selected template. The template defines what the licensee may do; the fee defines what they pay.
What a complete license grant contains
When issuance resumes, a usable license will consist of:
— the work (identified by its registered asset hash);
— the owner wallet authorizing the grant;
— the recipient wallet receiving it;
— the selected template defining permissions;
— the fee and duration;
— the terms hash binding the grant to its exact written terms.
A grant is complete only when the signed transaction and the verification result agree. Anything short of that — a screenshot, an editor state, a conversation — is not a license.
Prepare a future license now
The pause is a good window to get your inputs in order. Everything below is preparation you control entirely:
Identify the work
Save the registered asset hash and the exact audio version it fingerprints.
Identify the parties
Record the owner wallet and the intended recipient wallet, confirmed in writing by each party.
Choose terms
Document your intended positions on commercial use, AI training, derivatives, territory, duration, credit, fee, and restrictions. Deciding these calmly, before a deal is on the table, produces better terms than deciding under deadline.
Wait for signed issuance
Do not rely on an editor setting or marketplace button as a license while issuance is paused. If a deal cannot wait, paper it the traditional way — a written agreement between the parties — and record the grant on-chain when issuance resumes.
Verify before use
When the system is live, verify the grant before relying on it: the signed transaction and the verification result must agree.
On-chain license versus legal license
An on-chain license record documents a grant — parties, terms hash, fee, duration — in signed, public form. Whether a particular arrangement also needs a traditional signed writing is a legal question that depends on what is being granted and where; exclusive transfers in particular generally require signed writings under laws like 17 U.S.C. § 204. When in doubt, do both, and keep them consistent. See Limitations for the full boundary.
